Spanish Colonial Religious Art Exhibit 1650-1950
April 30th, 2010 - June 13th, 2010
From the Seventeenth Century on, Spanish friars in New Mexico imported religious sculptures and paintings from Europe and Mexico to adorn newly built mission churches. By the second half of the Eighteenth century, several New Mexican artists were transforming native woods and other materials into bultos, retablos, hide paintings and more in local versions of the Baroque style. This exhibition examines 300 years of this traditional, but nearly forgotten, art form. This exhibition is funded in part by the Inasmuch Foundation, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and Allied Arts. For accommodations on the basis of disability or more information on this exhibit, call the museum at (405) 878-5300.
